The Nereid Coleoide

“The Nereid Coleoide” is another of my manipulated fractal / rendered figure images.

The image is comprised of six layers. A Mandelbulb 3-dimensional fractal provides the multicoloured puckered shapes which hint at octopus limbs. A wire-frame female figure with texture applied is then layered into the background. Above those layers are photos and other transparencies to give an undersea effect to the scene.

I invented the name Coleoide. Nereus and Doris had 50 daughters – the Nereids (sea-nymphs), and many are mentioned by name in the writings of Homer, Hesoid and Hyginus, but the sources do not necessarily agree. So my completely imaginary Nereid is in safe company – perhaps.

The name derives from the word Coleoidae – the scientific sub-class of animals that includes octopus, squid and cuttlefish.
