Parawisata City – a Soundscape

A micro-tonal ambient soundscape evoking a dark, futuristic city-scape reminiscent of the original “Blade Runner” movie made in 1982.

Data Source

The note sequences for this piece arose from my own (probably very flawed!) transcription from a manuscript of a classical Gamelan work called “Ladrang Parawisata, laras slendro pathet sanga”.

Method

My technique for re-imagining the work was:

  • Slow the tempo to approximately 25%.
  • Extend some notes to a legato length.
  • Replace traditional Gamelan instruments with synthesized pads, bells and gongs with accompanying FX chains.
  • Apply envelope automation to create cross-fades between instruments.
  • Add incidental sound FX.

Micro-tuning

The tuning system I used is Gamelan “slendro” – a five-note scalic structure whose notes do not match any of those in the 12-tone traditional western system. To get a sense of how the 5 slendro pitches (“ji”, “ro”, “lu”, “ma”, “nem”) relate to 12-TET tuning, the diagram below graphically illustrates the relationship:

Visuals

The city-scape I created using the wonderful “Dystopika” by Voids Within. It is introduced on the Steam platform as “Dystopika is a small city-builder inspired by cyberpunk and the wanderlust of cities that never sleep.
