Being old and still into board games makes me something of a “Billy-No-Mates” – so I am interested in those board games that play well solo.
Castle Ravenloft (the Board Game) suits my needs really well. I loved the huge amount of minis that came with the game, and enjoyed painting them up. The room/corridor tiles are nicely illustrated, but the designers made (I think) a rather odd design decision with the 2×2 inch tiles that represent things like traps, items, or effects that persist on the game map – they just printed the name and the rules on the tile itself – this despite the fact that each such item also has a separate card with the rules printed on it.
I enjoy looking at a nice map with painted minis and some scenery on it; I don’t really want to see tiles on the map that have the game rules printed on them – it breaks the immersion.
So, I made my own substitutes for the set of twelve 2″ x 2″ tiles that come with the game:
Alarm Trap, Crossbow Turret Trap, Crushing Wall Trap, Dart Trap, Fire Trap, Sliding Walls Trap, Spear Gauntlet Trap, Consecrated Ground, Illusionary Crowd, Freezing Cloud, Glyph of Warding and Klak’s Artifact.
The designs are available as an A4-size PDF sheet if you want to print a set for yourself:
